Investigating bartender drinking habits
About this research
We’re exploring how the drinking behaviour of bartenders and how it relates to their relationships with work, colleagues and unique job stressors.
We aim to gain a clearer picture of bartenders’ drinking patterns and the underlying motivations, with the intention of improving health outcomes for bartenders and the broader hospitality workforce.
Who can participate
You're eligible to participate in this study if you:
- currently work as a bartender; that is, your primary role is the preparation and service of alcohol (paid shifts in the past 8 weeks)
- live and work in Brisbane.
What's involved
You'll be asked to:
- complete a 20 minute online survey
- answer questions about your alcohol use, job characteristics, work stress, and job satisfaction.

Ethics, data collection and privacy
This study has been approved by The University of Queensland Human Research Ethics Committee [Approval No.2024/HE001481].
