Understanding experiences with benzodiazepines

About this research

We aim to learn about the experiences of people who take benzodiazepines, including any positive or negative effects. This includes reasons people take benzodiazepines, how they feel about their use, what they know about potential risks, and what makes it difficult to seek help with negative effects if needed.

Who can participate

You are eligible to take part in this survey if you:

  • have taken benzodiazepines or z-drugs in the past 12 months
  • are currently aged 18 years or older
  • live in Australia
  • are comfortable reading and writing in English.

What’s involved

You'll be asked to complete a 15-20 minute online survey.

The survey includes questions about:

  • your demographic background (e.g. age, gender, state/territory)
  • your use of benzodiazepines (including where you get them from and how long you have been using them for)
  • any negative side effects you may have experienced
  • your views about your use, including a desire to cut down or stop
  • any barriers you have experienced or anticipate in trying to access support to reduce or stop using benzodiazepines.
At the end of the survey, you'll be asked whether you'd be interested in sharing more about your experiences in a follow-up interview. This is entirely optional and will have no impact on how your responses to the survey are used.

Benefits of participating

You’ll have the option to be entered into a prize draw for a $50 gift card.

Your responses may contribute to a better understanding of experiences of taking benzodiazepines in Australia and the barriers people face to accessing support.

How to participate

If you meet the eligibility criteria and you’re interested in participating, complete the survey.
