Visual attention and brain stimulation

About this research

We are investigating the mechanisms underlying how individuals direct their attention.

Who can participate?

You're eligible to participate in this study if you:

  • are between 18 and 35 years old
  • have English as your first language, or fluency equivalent
  • are right handed
  • have normal/corrected-to-normal vision and hearing
  • do not have any neurological, psychotic, or mood disorder(s) currently or in the past
  • are not currently using psychotropic drugs
  • have no current use of psychiatric medication(s).

What's involved?

You'll be asked to attend 2 sessions.

The first one hour session will be online, and must be completed at least 24 hours prior to the in-person session. You'll be asked to complete several cognitive tasks. This session must be completed in the same half of the day as the in-person session time you choose.

The second 2 hour in-person session will be completed at UQ St Lucia. We'll be using a form of non-invasive brain stimulation known as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). You'll be asked to complete a cognitive task which involves responding to visual stimuli presented on the screen, alongside receiving tDCS for half the task duration (25 minutes).

You must complete the pre-screening questionnaire that we will email to you within 24 hours, so that we determine your eligibility to receive tDCS. You'll need to abstain from alcohol for 24 hours before the study, and have clean and dry hair for the session.

Benefits of participating

Participants will be reimbursed $20 per hour (approximately $60 total for 3 hours).
